A Monumentous Occassion

It isn't everyday that I agree with the President. And even today isn't really one of those days, but it might be as close as I'll ever come.

Yesterday the President was in California talking about immigration, which has quickly become a hot button issue for the mid term elections. But according to a snippet in the Economist, "President Bush went to California where he called on Congress to pass a bill giving official status to illegal immigrants and said punitive measures being pushed by some congressmen were 'unrealistic'."

For those of you who don't know, there are Congresspeople out there pushing for a wall to be built along the border of Mexico as our new immigration policy. While on the liberal side some are calling for the legalization of all the illegal immigrants currently in the US, also a bit extreme. It was nice to see the President walk the moderate line, and in reading his immigration plan I saw some good points as well as some things I was unsure about. But all in all it was refreshing to not feel a sense of dread while reading about my President.

  • Well you're right, James Madison would warn us about protecting the Constitution adn those people sneaking into the country in trucks overnight, but the point I am making is simply that I'm suprised and slightly heartened by the President's moderate approach. Not that I believe we should be making them all citizens, but that building a wall is equally as ridiculous.
